Subject: Should I tell my mom her estranged brother died?
I would ask your mom if you found out news about someone in the estranged family had died or was ill would she want you to tell her. She will probably say no and then your concerns are resolved. Or she says yes and you tell her.

I feel sort of burdened by this info now. I doubt she even cares, but it just feels odd carrying this around. It would hurt her to tell her though. She’s always very hurt that none of them reach out to her. It’s a long story for a different thread.
Don't tell. What is there to be gained here? You would just be hurting your mother in order to unburden yourself. Keep this to yourself and learn from your mistake.

I would mention it to her. Tell her that you were bored and doing searches on Facebook and found out that he died.

Well said and it is not easy to cut out family. It hurts but sometimes has to be done. Hats of to your mother pp and I hope your sister is doing better.
+1000. DH finally cut off his relationship with his older brother, who had bullied and criticized him at every opportunity since he was a toddler.
