For years, I used cheap phones. First free ones, then $50 ones when I moved up to Smart phones. Finally a couple of years ago I got a bigger smart phone for the first time and spent about $200 for a phone. It was nice, but slowly had problems, first with space, then services didn't work right. After a year, I went back to my carrier and got a replacement, but after about another year, I finally gave up. When the Samsung Galaxy S8 came out, Best Buy had a sale on Galaxy S7 (originally $650, on sale for $500), so I bought one. It's been close to a year and I have never been happier with a phone. Works great, more space, services work correctly and smoothly after a year, better than any of the cheap phones. Since I use the phone a lot, it has been a good buy for me.

iPhone 8 to replace my iPhone 5 last fall. $699. Mine didn't qualify for a trade-in but my DD traded in her iPhone 6 for a $300 credit. TMobile.

Yes, phones are expensive, but when you really think about it, they’re so many devices in one. It does the work of a phone, laptop (to an extent), GPS, camera, alarm clock, stopwatch, calendar, and so much more. So I get it.

80 on sale for my ZTE Warp7 on Boost.

fwiw, if you have water damage problems, you might want to consider a phone that is waterproof... like the Galaxy S6 active.

Or a case that is largely waterproof for quick dunks.

iPhone 6 Plus - $700. But I use it for my business - its absolutely essential. I also have an unlimited data plan for $100/mo.

Free Samsung J7 when I signed up with metro PCS and transferred my Verizon plan and flip phone

Huawei Honor $130. Purchased from Amazon on Prime Day 2016. I always pay cash for phones and never more than $150. It does everything I need it to do (my tablet and notebook are covered in dust because I almost never use them).

My fri nd did that but it was a buy one get one free. You only get the free one if it stays on your contract (disallowing you to sell it).

because OP asked "how much did you spend on the phone you currently use?" and people give answers like "$20/mo" or $30/mo. for either 24 mos or 36 mos....

If you don't answer with the actual math DONE, then it is hard to compare. You spent $960 on your phone. Someone spent $700. Someone else spent $220. Different phones. But, answering with a monthly cost hides the actual cost.
