It sound like overwhelming odds but every year I know a lot of kids who get in from our local public. They're bright and nice kids but not out-of-the-norm brilliant or impressive.
That odds would make these school on par with selective colleges! I don't think so.
Potomac is about 35% - 40% acceptance, Sidwell probably around 20-25%.
Before any Potomac parents out there start throwing a fit, reason for the higher percentage is because historically Potomac's yield is not as high as Sidwell's (or the GDS, NCS/STA bunch).
Potomac, as much as it wants to be, just does not have as much name recognition as Sidwell. Not a reflection that it is a bad school, so calm down.
From my experience dealing with families from all different private schools in the DMV, Potomac families, by far, have the largest chip on their shoulders.![]()

Their class size is 50, Sidwell is 30 and Potomac targets 30-40. I gotta imagine Potomac and Sidwell will be much lower than 30-35 as a result because GDS loses some to Sidwell more than Sidwell loses to GDS.
Last year GDS's acceptance rate for 9th grade was 18%
See so Potomac at 12.5% to 25% makes a lot of sense.
Because there are less slots.

Its all relative, OP as I would say the laregst chip can routinely be found on the GDS shoulders. -Cathedral parent
First of all, why would you say such a thing? Second of all, why would you out yourself as a Cathedral parent. Rather embarrassing for them, no? I hope you're just a troll trying to make NCS look bad.
Nah I am not a Cathedral parent and I say GDS---the whole Harvard thing.

When was this? And was it for 9th grade? We didn't apply to Sidwell or Potomac but I did ask about this in our Maret interview and was told they expect 250-300 applications for 9th. That was in November though, so potentially they got more than they expected.

+ not only about H. When I just came to this forum, I thought it's troll or a joke. Then after reading many GDS parents' p, I can feel their tone is slightly different from others. Guess the whole GDS thing coming from.
