Last summer we rented a lake house on Vancouver Island in Canada, and we loved it. We spent a couple of days in Vancouver, then took the ferry to Victoria (on Vancouver Island), and drove 30 minutes to our lake house. I would highly recommend it.

Petoskey is lovely and not quite as far. About four hours drive from Detroit and an hour from Traverse City.

DP. We go to the Belgrade Lakes in Maine every year - a very different vibe from the coast, I think. I love going to Maine in the summer - to sleep under a heavy blanket and wear fleece at night and then swim and boat during the day is awesome.


Yes! That’s yet another reason why we love Maine.

We took a road trip to Quebec City (with stops in Montreal, Cooperstown (baseball hall of fame), and NYC). We really didn't venture outside of Quebec City, but plan to return and hit some country waterfront areas. I think the Clintons were vacationing in a waterfront area somewhere in the greater Quebec area---maybe google it?

We really enjoyed Quebec City---very European, and lots to do.

If you don't want to drive, you could fly to Montreal and then rent a car.

OP here. Wow I love all of these suggestions.

For those who asked, we’ve been in three different locations. Once in a very secluded location near Freeport, once near BarHarbor, and once in Old Orchard Beach. OOB was our least favorite but our kids loved it the most.

We rented on 3 Crabs Road in the Dungenous area of Sequim,Washington. 6 families rented three houses. It was fantastic.

Out the back weasel the sound, MountBaker, theSanJuanIslands and the ships coming out of Seattle every evening. If we got sick that view,we turned around and saw a beautiful pastoral view in the near ground and the Olympics off a bit. It is the only place I have ever been that had two absolutely spectacular and very different views in one location. We hiked out Dungenous spit one day, took the ferry to Victoria for the day another, Hiked on hurricane ridge two days , rented boats on Cresent Lake, shaped and ate in Port Townsend. We took one weekend in Seattle as part of our trip too.


My suggestion is Canada but we’ve also done a similar trip to this one and it was beautiful and lovely. Also Bainbridge Island near Seattle.
