We do plain yogurt with fruit/low sugar jam or lemon curd mixed in. Or siggi’s.

Sugar in yogurt is also one of My Things as a PP put it. Siggi's vanilla with 4% milkfat is a decent option, IMO. We also will do plain yogurt with jam, and you can try maple syrup as well. I advise not letting your kids stir it, because they won't do a good job and then probably won't eat the plain-tasting yogurt that's leftover at the bottom (which I don't blame them for, I don't like plain yogurt either).

Keep in mind that 8oz of low fat milk has 12 g sugar. All dairy has natural sugar. Good idea to limit the added sugar to yogurts.

I think labeling is coming soon, about added vs. Intrinsic sugar.

Gage Greek yogurt has 9g of sugar and 22(!)g of protein. I give that to my toddler mixed with a bit of fruit.

I like Icelandic Provisions Skyr. It has 11 grams of sugar, but it also has 15 grams of protein, so there's that.

You realize that homemade yogurt has roughly the same amount of sugar as plain yogurt from the store, right? I've made my yogurt as well when plain whole milk yogurt wasn't as widely available, but it's not like store bought plain yogurt (organic if you like) is really any different from what you'd make.

Plain yogurt with fruit has zero added sugar. It's all natural sugars. Add wheat germ if you want a little texture.

If you have an Instant Pot, it is very easy to make your own!
Just dump a half-gallon of FairLife milk and add a couple of tablespoons of plain yogurt (I know it seems crazy that you need yogurt to make yogurt, but in the future, you can use some from your previous batch) and hit the button. It takes 8 hours, then you chill and strain (if desired). It is delicious! When serving flavor with honey, fruit, etc.

Oikos Triple Zero yogurts have 6 to 7 grams of sugar. I've had tastier yogurts but was getting dismayed at the 13-plus grams of sugars in them and switched to Triple Zero mostly. Low fat Greek yogurt with a small amount of honey or jam is fine too but it's easy to overdo the jam etc.....

LOL! I'm OP. My kids get plenty of sugar. I just try to follow American Heart Association guidelines for added sugar consumption for kids. I don't want to blow it unnecessarily on stuff like yogurt, which is actually quite sweet. I'm not sure why it wouldn't constitute a dessert on a regular day.

It sounds like 13/14 grams is normal-sih. I'll try adding the jam option.


I agree, OP. Yogurt/ice cream - my kid is happy with either. As a kid, my all-time favorite dessert was frozen yogurt - my mom put Dannon Fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt into popsicle molds, and we were set!

Chobani tubes are definitely lower in sugar than Stoneyfield tubes or other big brands like Gogurt (except I've never compared Annies).

But I have to agree that yogurt isn't dessert.
