Subject: Are there any Central or South American cities/areas that would be convenient for a long weekend?
Panama City is pretty boring. The old city is not that interesting and the Canal is kinda interesting, but that's just an afternoon.

Just went to Cartagena for a few nights and it was great. Really easy and just so beautiful and charming. You could also easily do Panama as suggested but I find it kind of boring besides the few hours spent seeing the canal.

For such a short tirp, you want a place with direct flights. So that narrows it down:
BWI: Cancun, Costa Rica (both Liberia and San Jose), Cabo San Lucas
DCA: None (it's not an international airport, and there is a perimeter limit)
IAD: Cabo San Lucas, Mexico City, Cancun, Guautemala, El Salvador, Bogota, Panama, San Jose, Lima, Sao Paolo
BWI: Cancun, Costa Rica (both Liberia and San Jose), Cabo San Lucas
DCA: None (it's not an international airport, and there is a perimeter limit)

I live in Mexico City and nine times out of ten the lines at immigration in the terminal where United arrives are much, much, much shorter than the lines at the terminal where Delta and AeroMexico arrive. That said, even with the long lines, I don't think that they are so bad that I'd say that your weekend is consumed by standing in line when you arrive...

I love Mexico City but getting through immigration is sooooo time consuming. The lines are always very long so a quick weekend gets consumed by a long time at the airport. Buenos Aires is about a 10 our flight from Miami, not a good choice for a weekend. La Paz, it will take you a long time to recover from the altitude so you won't enjoy a short visit.

Medellin and Cartagena are both interesting but 4 days is plenty in either city. For longer flights Buenos Aires is my favorite city in the world and Montivideo is also fun/interesting for 5 days. Finally, Quito would be a good 5 day trip.
I did five days in Mexico City last Feb, it was great and I can't wait to go back, though you're glad to leave by the last few days.
Glad to hear about the recommendation for Montevideo, I'm going to Chile soon and I've been thinking about spending a weekend there while I'm down there.

Guatemala - try Lake Atitlan and Antigua.
Nicaragua - try Leon and Granada.
All of these places would be great to visit around the Easter holiday as Holy Week festivities are fun.

Panama City is hot and humid. Mexico City (and Bogota and Quito) is very temperate. It's cold at night right now, but never gets hot.
