Ack, OP, no! If you are actually IB for Peabody your odds are good--not 100%, but decent. Research schools--not just by looking at test scores or on DCUM but actually visiting a few, rank 12 of them (or a smaller number if you don't have 12 you prefer to your current situation) in order of your true preference, and hope for the best. Absolutely rank your IB school unless there is no way you'd ever send your kid there.

You have no chance at Brent or Peabody or Maury so don't bother listing them. You do have a chance, though a very very very low one, at SWS and CHLM (higher for CHLM than SWS because more spaces) so you should definitely list them. Someone has to get in every year and you just might get lucky. Also consider Ludlow and JO though you will get waitlisted but you might get in eventually. Two Rivers. Appletree also good to list.

We aren’t IB for Miner and liked JO better. (FWIW so did Charles Allen, who likely has access to pretty good info about these things.) I will say, however, that I liked miner better than Tyler English or Payne.

Also consider Stokes East End (Spanish or French immersion). They will have lots of spaces available since they are opening a brand new school. Based on a rumored location near a metro and along East Capitol, it would be a reasonable drive from near the Potomac Ave. metro station.

She can play around with the order, but the point is she should not rank any school she likes better than Peabody below Peabody.

Sure, but if OP doesn't get a high enough lottery draw for Peabody (her IB), she probably isn't going to get into JOW out of bounds.

I think her list should look like this:

Any schools she'd rather go to than Peabody
Peabody
Schools that will likely have a decent number of OOB seats or don't have an IB preference, which she prefers to whatever her current childcare arrangement is: the various Appletrees, Eagle Academy, maybe Amidon and Miner.

If that doesn't get to 12 schools, then sure put in some others.

Also if OP lives close to Potomac Ave, visiting Friendship Chamberlain makes sense.

I would not do Tyler at all. I’d do Payne over it.

Peabody has IB kids waitlisted every year that don't get in eventually until K.

This year, all IB kids got in PK4 at Peabody (some on wait list for a bit, but they got in before school started).
