I came from highly educated parents with professional careers, and both sets of grandparents were also highly educated, wealthy, cultured, etc. I’m not saying blue collar workers can’t be cultured or that advanced degrees from stellar institutions automatically trumps someone without a college degree. But I had a culture shock once I joined my husband’s family. I underestimated how much time I would end up having to interact with them (weekly) and how miserable those visits would be. We meet up for every single holiday plus Fathers Day Mothers Day extended families’ birthdays, 12 birthdays. My first year of marriage, I thought, how did I end up here?
