She calls them all by first name. I've told her to call them Mrs. Last Name until they say "Oh, call me Larla." They all do that the first time she calls them Mrs. Or she's flat out introduced to them as Larla, Marla's mom.

When I was growing up, I called my friends' parents Mr/Mrs. Last name and my parents' friends by their first names.


This is how I grew up too. I guess because my parents and their friends were a pretty laid-back group, but there was still a cultural expectation that you'd call most adults Mrs. And Mr. Last name (I'm 40 fwiw). I find myself doing the same with my kids. They call my friends--whom they've known their whole lives-- by their first name, but parents of their friends Mr. And Mrs.

All first names, they usually ask and often refer to them as "Sam's mom or dad" but not a single one of their friends parents has asked or required being Mr or Mrs X. You all sound so old fashioned.

You do know that this will not keep you from being an adult. We all grow up.

I.e., “you don’t have to call me Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Smith is MY mother!” — you are a parent, own it.


Very confused by this. I am fully grown up, didn't realize changing my name and becoming a Mrs. was a requirement for that. I just gently say, don't call me Mrs. LastName, just call me FirstName.

I prefer "Ms Firstname" or "Larla's mom." I wouldn't mind "Ms Lastname" but would find it (charmingly) old-fashioned.

Most of my DC's friends use one of the above. One of my oldest DS' friends comes from a very hippie home and calls me "Firstname." I don't love it but seeing that the friend's parents encourage my DS to call them by their first names only, I leave it alone.

Kids are in middle school. We do Ms. Firstname and Mr Firstname


There are a few adults in our lives that are just firstname, but they are not the parent's of their friends.

My children's principal is a friend of my mothers. We are in a private school where parents always address administration by their first names. I just can't do it when I speak with her. She is Mrs. Smith. By now, everyone knows our history and laughs at me when we're in a room with others.

That might be cultural. In the south that is very common.
