NP here - my family ( 5 kids ranging from 4 - 14, 6 adults in their 40s, and mother in her mid-70s) are thinking about doing a family trip to San Diego in summer 2019. Would Mission Beach be the right place to rent a large house? We like going to the beach and will want to do all the kid-friendly activities plus would love a cute walkable area with shops, restaurants, etc. Thanks for any suggestions!

Just a head's up - the La Jolla Sheraton isn't really in La Jolla. It's next to strip malls, the freeway and UCSD. It is walkable, though, to some family-friendly restaurants. It's probably a fine hotel, just didn't want you to think you'd be able to walk to the ocean, etc. You will have to have a car in SD no matter where you stay and that location is very central to going either south (Zoo, Sea World) or North (Legoland, Disneyland).

No to Gaslight--that will get old quickly. Go visit once. It's better for young partiers.

There really is no best place to stay. Gaslight I guess.

Coronado Marriott, hands down. Mission Valley Marriott is in the middle of a retail area, not too walkable.

We actually had our wedding there. Gorgeous and understated, but with young kids, I might stay somewhere more kid-friendly, and a bit more centrally located (depending on what activities you want to do). I'm the former SD resident who recommended Mission Bay Hilton or downtown La Jolla.

Coronado or the Estancia La Jolla, which is unbelievably gorgeous. But you'll need to rent a car either way.

La Jolla is gorgeous.

I stayed at a Marriott that's next to the Convention Center once and there was a train that came through at night and constantly blew it's horn. Super annoying and loud.

We'll be going at the end of March over spring break. I've been there once, very briefly, for work- stayed in the Gas Lamp District, but more like the very edge of it, had dinner in Little Italy, and went to my conference at the Sheraton on the marina. I didn't walk through the GSD, but in looking at the restaurants, they probably aren't the kind my kids would eat much at. I knew it was touristy, but am glad to hear about the noisiness.

I guess we'll have to drive at some point, somewhere. My husband found a good deal at the Sheraton in La Jolla, but we'll keep looking at your suggestions.

Or, the Hilton on the water in San Diego is very nice.

If you have kids go to mission bay, La Jolla or Coronado. If you want to be close to downtown little Italy is better than gas lamp. Gas lamp is touristy and downtown has a homeless problem - not safe for little kids and no park or outdoors which is the draw of San Diego.

Coronado Island is one of my favorite places in the United States. It's also very family friendly. It gets my vote.
