I suppose you've been there when I've burst into tears each of the three times I've been pulled over in 22 years. Or that I now roll down my back windows so you see I have children in the back seat. I sincerely think that you need to seek some type of counseling or therapy. The fear you are experiencing is something that you have created in your head and has little to do with reality. It's causing you to demonize people that you don't even know, and that is a really bad thing.

I am a cop too, and the only reason OP would be ticketed or have her car towed is if she had a horrible attitude. And what are the chances you will be pulled over? I've gone over 10 years without being pulled over.

Your boss is upset that you waited and let it come to this. Or you tend to make lots of excuses for not coming to work. None of them are horrible individually, but as a whole are bad so your boss has to push back. Maybe take a minute to consider if you do this with work assignments also and change in the future. But do not let your lisence expire.

In DC you get arrested for driving without a license and your car is towed and impounded - the police do not even have the discretion to let these slide.

Having said that MPD does virtually no traffic enforcement so the chances of getting stopped in the city are close to zero.

Exactly. You get a cop who is having a bad day and that’s it. Add being a POC into the mix and you’re doomed.

You can get arrested and taken to jail. Like 17:53, I know someone who went to jail because he was driving with an expired license. Do not listen to your boss.

Why did you wait so long? Surely you knew weeks or months in advance that your license was going to expire. By planning ahead, you could have avoided all of this.

You have good reason to be scared of the cops! OP, it is highly doubtful that you will get caught, and even less likely that the officer will issue toy a ticket for being a week expired. Now if your license is suspended, then you will have a problem.

I can tell you what could happen.

Last year my license expired on a Saturday, and I spaced out on renewing it the week before. I figured I'd go to the gym first thing Monday morning, then go straight to the DMV when it opened. What are the chances I'd get pulled over, right? Turns out 100%. The police officer (only other car on the damn road at 6am) pulled me over because his license plate scanning gizmo told him I had an expired license. That's right, I wasn't doing anything else naughty, just driving without a license and his computer got me.

He told me I was not allowed to drive until I renewed it, and that technically he could impound my car. So I left my car in the gym parking lot and took Uber to the DMV, renewed, and then Ubered back. (Not taking any more chances, no sir.)

Of course I still had the ticket. When the court date came around, I went to court, and happily the judge dismissed the ticket when I produced my renewed license. But I still had to waste a morning going to court.

If I had a do-over, I sure as heck would have renewed my license the week before.

If you get pulled over and your license is expired you won’t be allowed to drive away.

What state do you live in? It varies quite a bit by state.

I know that If you are in VA you can renew online. Even if you don’t get the updated license before the expiry date, if you get stopped the officer can tell it’s renewed when he calls it in.

Does your state offer up an extension?
