I did this. Friend told me, I sat on it for s day or so. Called the friend back and told him he had 24 hours to tell his wife (who I had a long friendship with) or I would. He spilled immediately.

Yes, but not everyone is as rational as you. If you are a good friend, you probably know how they would react to the news.
