The new standard Toyota safety features are awesome - the auto high beams and radar cruise control in particular. Great choice!

If you love driving and still want a hatchback, then get either the Mazda3 or a VW Golf.

Won't the amount you get from the insurance be a big determining factor? Are you ok with paying the difference?

I'd consider a Toyota Corolla or RAV4.

I think you might feel the Honda Fit is too small.

Test drive it and it was awesome! I went with a RAV because I needed more space, but was very much almost convinced. Plus, you can very cheaply get it loaded - I think like 22k for the EX-L which should have a moonroof.

Get the Subaru Forester XT, they are pricey but you will not regret it:

The 2018 Honda Fit has a billion spiffy features, is comfortable, backed by Honda and affordable. I’m actually kind of sad that my car got totaled earlier in the year—-I have a 17.

My 2005 Pontiac Vibe (twin to the Matrix) got rear-ended and totaled earlier this year, and I am loving my Ford C-Max replacement. Feels similar in size and function to the Vibe/Matrix. New is probably out of your price range, but you could look used. And it's a hybrid!

I’ve got a 2003 Corolla and I see tons of other ones from that year still on the roads. Corollas are a great, if not exciting, car.

I can also recommend Hyundai Elantras. You can get a new one with your budget.
