Funny, most of my gay friends are white and members of a church. Maybe it's because I'm gay, white, and part of a church.
Olney isn't going to be any different culturally from Silver Spring and its environs. You'll be fine.
Olney is much whiter than SS or TP. Some people move from SS or TP because they what whiter schools, or don't like living in a diverse neighborhood. Some of them more to Anne Arundel County or Howard County.
I think the OP should really consider neighborhood as the most important thing when looking for a house because your children are going to possibly grow up with no one else in their neighborhood or school in a family that looks like yours. I'd find out the number of registered Republicans and Democrats in Olney to tell you what the politics are like of your potential neighbors.
I know one lesbian family in Stonegate in Silver Spring, which is pretty far out and houses are bigger.
