My younger does this. She's 10. The older one reminds her from time to time it is yucky and how she shouldn't do that to her old coat etc. I am sure it is a phase that will pass.

Yes. It is indeed disgusting. Especially since we couldn't wash the coat everyday. We were concerned of the bacteria on her collars and the effects of the spit and all her licking it everyday. It was such a headache for us.

We tried painting stuff, jewellery, coaxing, rewarding but were not keen for any meds. What eventually worked for us was a simple solution! A scarf! We couldn't stop her habit of chewing on the strings but we have now found her a coat and hoodie without strings and that works great too.

my dd also did this. she said she was bored and just had to! they will autocorrect themselves when it is no longer socially appropriate and i think she stopped when she entered high school.

she still chews her pens but i think i did too for many years. :p

my daughter does this too. (11) we brought her to the doctor previously who suggested redirection and chewy jewellery but she doesn't like them and goes back to licking her coat, nail biting and pen chewing. The coat is always in need of a wash! So the doctor can only suggest strategies but they don't work for us. We tried painting with the biter stuff but that encourages her even more! She doesn't mind the bitter stuff at all! Any suggestions from anyone would help! We thought we were the only ones with this problem but I guess we are not!

Yeah. Though not sure if it's psychological or anything. Just people with different habits. Same with pen chewers and glasses chewing. Just icks me out. My middle school daughter is a big pen chewer and it drives me insane coming across all these soggy chewed flat pen caps.

OP, it does still happen in high school! I had a first hand experience as a non coat licker! I was In high school with my extended family when my coat was stolen at a busy restaurant coat rack. My older cousin then offered me her old coat that she was wearing as she has just bought a new one earlier that day. She warned me though that she hadn't washed it! Didn't think much of it and readily agreed for her alternative but after I zipped it up, I realized the collars were all wet and damp and the smell of her coat collars from all the licking was really terrible! The toggle pulls also had many little indentations from her biting on it I guess! I had to bear with it for the two hours while the family went for a walk in the night markets!

But after a wash, it was fine and as it was a good goretex coat, I used the coat for a few years till I grew out of it. The fleece collars were a little worn at the tips but it was not noticeable. We have been out many times and I have never seen her licking her coat and she must have done it so discreetly even though the collars were really all wet from all the licking!

So it does happen even for high schoolers, OP! She has grown up too to be normal now so I wouldn't worry about it too unless your daughter is doing something really inappropriately and non discreetly.

I have to admit it. :-/. I still do chew on those strings. It is just too hard to resist twirling them or chewing on them. I didn't lick or hee my coat when young but I still do bite the collars when trying to unzip my coat wsometimes when my hands are full. I know it is not the most hygienic thing to do but it's a habit from young I guess.

My girls don't chew or lick their coats though one has a best friend (11) that does it discreetly I think. Though I haven't really seen Licking it but her collars are "wet" when I hung up her coat for her. It's her coat and it doesn't really bother anyone really so I would also vote for leaving it alone OP.

My kid did it a ton. Also used to chew holes in his shirts. We never made a big deal out of it and he does it less now. Though still a little.

It’s NBD,in my opinion. Don’t cause more stres by stressing about it.

Have you not seen it before? It is pretty common! Why feel weirded out? Biting hoodie strings are as common as pen chewing and I have seen many who haven't broken the habit yet as adult. My two colleagues next to me are pen chewers and they chew only
Their own pens. So it isn't so disgusting like in high school where they would chew yours. My best friend in middle school was also a coat licker. Didn't bother me at all! It's her own coat anyway! I would just MYOB and recognize that we each have our own quirks and habits. So yeah, I guess I would leave it alone OP! Sending to the doc is an overkill unless she starts licking the table and walls!

Another vote for nothing to worry about. I chewed on pen caps at that age, and bit my nails, too. All distracted and mindless habits that I grew out of in time.

Above all else, I find it hilarious that some busybody mom at church pulled you aside to share her "concern" about it. Ridiculous! Lady needs to get a hobby.
