Weird. 90% of library patrons at mine are parents and their kids.

Ours definitely has more of a community center vibe. If you want a quiet area, you need to book one of the quiet rooms. Our library parking lot is the main drop off point for 4 private schools, so many of the kids whose parents can't immediately pick up use the library to start homework, and more often than not, just hang out.

I know notices were posted not too long ago about kids under 13 not being allowed to hang out in the library once they get off the private school buses, but no one really enforces it. Many parents use it as free after school care until they can get off work.

The one near us has zones. One is downstairs and normal conversation is allowed but not yelling. Upstairs is hush tones and then there is the quiet room. I think it has changed to acknowledge that a lot of the users are families with kids who are not going to be quiet. Ours has a bathroom and tables reserved for kids and thier caregivers. And even tables where food is allowed (to me this is the strangest change).

The library might have a quiet room. The central library in Arlington Co has one on the 2nd floor.

Our router died on us one time and I had a deadline for work that required me to be on the internet. I went to the library for a couple hours. Found the quiet room with the desks in the back.

A couple weeks ago, my child had a rehearsal a bit of a drive from home. I had some work to do again, and I needed an internet connection again. The library was close and it wasn't Starbucks.

Both of these were Fairfax county libraries. I was able to do what I needed there in relative quiet.

Not in my experience and not in our community. Everyone uses the public library where they have a beautiful and separate wing for the children's library (which is not terribly quiet) with a closed play area and separate story time theater. Our public library also has upstairs community services like a passport office. Students, parents, retired people - everyone really uses our beautiful library. We are very, very fortunate.
