Thanks PP - DS did say he's interested in action/adventure, so will be adding this to our every growing list.

Feel like I need to buy a bookcase now!

Harris and Me, by Gary Paulsen. Also by the same author, "Hatchet," "Brian's Return," "Mr. Tucket."
The library has lots of downloadable audio books he can listen to at bedtime. This is probably the best way to get him interested.
Also "Running Out of Time" by Haddix.

My boy who doesn't like to read enjoyed the I Funny series. He also liked the Cheesie Mack books (only after getting through the first couple of chapters of the first book), but I can't remember if it was geared for MS or late elementary.

After I've done that, I can eventually hand him the book and read my own novel next to him. Making the reading somewhat "social" seems to help him.

I like that strategy. In past years what we've done is - I read one chapter, he reads the next, and we continue to pass it back and forth. I should probably start doing that again.
