Carmax takes old cars like this and sells them in lots to auctioneers. They are fixed up and then transported to places like Kentucky and South Carolina that don't have rigorous inspection rules. That's what we did with a 13 year old Mazda minivan and got $500 for it. We were kind of surprised to get anything at all.

We donated to Wheels for Wishes. They came and picked up the car, gave us a receipt, followed up with how much they were able to sell it for so we could claim as donation on our taxes. Excellent and easy!

That does sound sort of dodgy. I donated a 98 mountaineer one time that had all sorts of new parts on it (new control arm, AC condenser, power steering pump...), but the alternator and charging system was totally shot and it was a difficult job replacing it. The passenger door also had a locking issue (meaning, it wouldn't open). The veterans organization said the same thing, but I wasn't surprised in that instance. I am pretty sure they parted out that truck and the parts live on in South America somewhere. The organization came and picked up the truck after I jumped it and drove out of my backyard onto the wrecker....
