I seriously wouldn't trust doctors to determine whether wearable blankets are safer than a thin breathable blanket. I doubt they are doing some advanced scientific testing on them.

Of course nothing is 100% safe, but think of it--if you go against the guidelines and, God forbid, something horrible happens, can you live with yourself? Can you live with yourself if you do something your pediatrician told you explicitly NOT to do?

I'm not at all concerned. I'm way more concerned about my son climbing out of the crib.

Fwiw, all of our Scandinavian relatives use blankets even with newborns and these are people who forward face for years.

SIDS is hardly even a risk for wealthy, educated Americans. It's sadly more of a risk for poor uneducated people.

This would really get to you...my son started sleeping on his stomach (by rolling over) by 12 weeks old.

We didn't give our DS a blanket til he was about 2.5. He loved his sleepsack and his crib so we thought why mess with it when he sleeps well? Then right around 2.5 the zipper on his last, huge 'big kid' sleepsack finally broke and we took that opportunity to transition him from sleep sacks to blankets. Past age 1, though, I would've been comfortable giving him a blanket it's just that he wouldn't have ever stayed under it anyway so sleepsacks provided better coverage/warmth.

We did sleep sacks until my DD was 2 and then she started refusing to wear it. So we moved to a blanket. Use a BIG one so that it has a prayer of staying on.

My DS is 15 months and he has a lovie in his crib. But is still using a sleep sack. He moves, twirls, sits up and is ALL OVER the place while he sleeps, so no way a blanket would stay on. He'll be in a sleep sack for as long as I can convince him to put it on.

7 months but our DS is extremely mobile. Considering he can almost walk I'm sure he's fine with a blanket.

Our DS is 15m and he is using a thick sleepsack at night (he is using a lighter weight one in summer). We plan to keep the sleepsack as long as we can. If your DD's room is drafty, she is better off with a thick sleepsack than a blanket because the latter probably won't stay on.

We waited until 2. And then we did a crib sized (DS was still in a crib) blanket and toddler pillow. Once he moved to a bed (3.5) we did a regular blanket/sheets and a full sized pillow.

Not ridiculous depending on the mobility of the child. Most ped's don't recommend one while in the crib.

Around 18 months I added some stuffed animals and 1 blanket. He then asked for a pillow. Now at 2.5 he has a pillow, two or three blankets and like 5 stuffed animals. Still happy in the crib so not moving to a bed. But once they can sit/stand/move there's no reason to delay blankets. What are you afraid of? Your toddler is not going to suffocate.

my son doesn't have a blanket, but there are several stuffed animals in his crib and he is 19 mos. He uses a blanket at day care.
