Former planner of DC movie premieres here again. I guarantee you that 99% of the people invited will come straight from the office and will not be particularly dressed up. Do NOT go out a buy (or rent) a fancy cocktail dress for this--you will be overdressed. If you want to be a little nicer than work clothes, then wear a silky blouse, black pants or skirt and high heels. Or a basic black dress with big earrings or something. Nothing froufrou.
This is the worldwide premiere with Spielberg, Streep, Hanks, etc. Does that change your answer? Totally fine if it doesn't, just want to make sure we're talkign about the same thing.
Where is the event? That might change my answer a little bit...
