I don't know who Jewel is, so I'll go with NO.

What.

Dearest "What" ... you may be feeling it too ... the sudden realization that you are, as of this moment, officially OLD.

Damn.

I mean...I also know who Stevie Nicks and Cyndi Lauper are...that doesn't mean I was alive when they were popular. Music from those artists is like a cultural touchstone, I'd expect most people know who they are.

I’m not sure Jewel is on the same level as Stevie Nicks and Cyndi Lauper.

I was in college when she had her biggest hits and am only familiar with her best selling album, but would recover that there are several more out there that I’m not familiar with.

Every bit as good, if not better. Her voice is much better, she's very versatile, and her songwriting is probably some of the best stuff out there, especially her B-sides. Haunted, written from the perspective of a stalker, is a great example, especially in it's pure acoustic form. 0304 was an experiment for her musically, but the lyrics are pure Jewel gold.

I didn’t say she wasn’t as good, but she never reached the same level of popularity of Nicks or Lauper.

That was deliberate on her part.

Eh, somewhat cliche. Not my cuppa.

On his TV show he comes off as pretty odd.

He's an odd guy only if you don't take the lifestyle into account. He's a Vietnam vet as well, and I know had some early issues with alcohol. Completely sober now and has been for a long time. It's his ex-wife, Lenendra, that is odd as hell.

I’ve never been a huge Jewel fan but we listen to her Lullaby cd all the time in the car. Calms down the toddler and baby immediately. Quite magical actually.

She's also EXTREMELY good to her long-time followers. About 50 of us, with our plus-ones, were treated to a private free three hour concert in Nashville about five years ago. She also regularly asks for input into her new CDs, and we've been treated to lots of musical 'freebies'. She's such a prolific writer that she often forgets songs she's written/performed because she's only done it once. She likes us to 'bootleg' her concerts, and will sometimes ask us for recordings of a song. One of the songs on a recent album of her's made it on because my friend sent her the recording and I sent her the guitar tabs I'd written for it, so she could recreate it.

She's also known for working with companies that will rip her concerts off the soundboard so people can buy the concert after the concert. She understands there are people that would have loved to attend that could not, and it's nice to have those shows for sale. From a marketing standpoint, it's pretty brilliant.

Her father Atz is real gem of a man.

Just an all-around nice family.

I'm sorry, but these people are not cultural touchstones, even though they may have made good music. Some classical music composers that have stood the test of time, like Mozart and Beethoven, are cultural touchstones. Not comparable.
