What is a down sweater??

My kids have the Lands End version of a down sweater. Their only stipulation is that they like hoods. I prefer one jacket and layering underneath.

NP here - my daughter has a down sweater jacket that she wears when it's 40s +. When it's colder than that she wears a heavier coat (fleece + outer shell) that covers her butt and has a hood. If by chance it gets too hot she can take the outer shell off and just wear the fleece to recess.

This is exactly what my kids do. The down sweater is not appropriate for below 40 if you want your kid to be having a good time outside. That said, the down sweater is great for car seats because it's so thin and compressible, so on a really cold day i will drive them in these and then leave a heavy coat for recess.
So that's two coats right there. They also have church coats, oh no!!!!!!!!

Yes to the layering ideas, especially vests. We are a real vest family. DS hasn't switched to full on winter coat yet either. Though he is insisting on gloves, which I haven't clipped onto his "layers" (he's got some clipped to the winter coat), so it's just a matter of time til he loses those.
