Our youngest is only 4, but I don't think I'll care that much if this happens, as long as the children are busy and independent. Which, if they're not, they will not be welcome to return to living at home.

We will be 58 and 60 when our youngest is one year out from graduating college. That is when we will feel like true-empty nesters- when they aren't likely to come live at home for periods of time. I imagine they may want to live with us for a year after graduating- it seems to be what most of the kids do around here. We live in a good location where our neighbors graduating students get jobs, live at home and save for a year and then move out. We might both retire but find part time jobs before we are empty nesters- we've done a good job saving and could fully retire but we like being busy.

We will be 57 when the kids graduate from college. We enjoy our professions so we don't intend on retiring until 67-70ish.

Keep working. DH will be tenured and will work forever, I know. After another 5-8 years, I will pivot from being a CRNA to move into something more administrative/managerial.
