DD got the love plate at dinner that night, my ex came to dinner, and then we whipped out the cake. DD's younger sisters screamed congratulations and threw confetti on DD. It was something that really only cost $30 or whatever, but totally marked the occasion and made DD feel loved and recognized.

Unbelievable.

+1 but a sweatshirt is fine too

PP - It's important not to tie their worth to a particular school. When they go and are unhappy for any reason even if it's just separation blues, you do not want your child afraid to talk to you due to feeling they shouldn't be disappointed. Getting into a 1st choice school comes with high expectaitons that it will be nirvana and that's impossible for any place ot live up to. You choose to believe that we are mean spirited but unless you've sent a kid away to college and had to deal with this, you don't know. These are very impressionable young adults on their own for the first time.

This has got to be one of the most mean spirited, bitter and twisted threads in terms of responses, that I've ever seen here.

OP. You celebrate when your kid gets in where they really want to go, and you do it in the style that suits you and your family.

Fxxk the asshats on DcUM (for the most part).

DH, DC, and I went out to dinner (DC chose restaurant). I think we were celebrating the end of the process as much as her getting into the school she wanted most. Had DC planned to keep applying, I’m not sure whether we would have celebrated (vs. simply said, hey that’s great. You can relax now.)

Warning - don't get so wrapped up in this decision. I've had two not get into their elite ED choice so don't make too big a deal of this before the decisions are posted.

Elite or not elite if your DC gets in of course celebrate a little with your family - just don't be a jerk about it, because not everybody will get the news they want.

Because that’s different than “elite” and not necessarily worth bragging about.

But please, not a sweater!? WTF. Only a grandpa wears a Harvard sweater. At Yale they probably all wear Yale sweaters though, so YMMV.

OP, ignore the haters and wannabes.

Yes, of course, you should celebrate. It is an accomplishment for your child. We did a family celebration with favorite dinner, cake/favorite dessert and balloons. Some family members sent logo gear after they heard.

Would Yale "Y" stickers to seal the envelopes be tacky?
