It's extremely rare -- kids are who they are -- but of course parents will see what they want to see, confirmation bias.

It's like expecting a kid who doesn't play baseball to go try out for the varsity high school team. Possible, but unlikely.

To be a good student you at least have to have a baseline IQ and reading and writing skills. I work with a lot of teens who are passed through grades and haven't completed a book in their life.

This describes my son too (although he's only a sophomore in College) he's night and day from his ES/MS early HS self.
