I think it's termites. I'd join Washington checkbook and find a good pest control company.

Soot is my guess. Even if you don't have a fireplace if there are fireplaces in homes near yours you will get soot.

They don't have to go up. Just show them the "dust".

It's probably a liability issue for the pest control guys.

I think it's definitely some sort of pest droppings. Call a few bug companies to come out for an inspection.

It's not powderpost beetles. They leave a sawdust colored texture, not black dust.
Just call a few bug guys to come out. They'll usually inspect for free.

OP here. I cleaned them out already, so uploaded are pictures that I find on the internet that looks like it.
Does that look like drywood termite dropping to you?

It’s mouse droppings. We bought a commercial building and gutted it. The layer of dried mouse droppings was appalling. Get someone qualified to remove it.
