Hi, live in Hyattsville, the ES is way over capacity, there is new development going in near Magruder Park soon and although the town itself is fantastic (walkable, great restaurants), no public official has even attempted to address the overcrowding issue.

Good things are happening at Hyattsville, Tasker, Kenmoor, Ogle, MLK and Greenbelt Middle to name a few off the top of my head. I kids at all of those middle schools so not EVERYONE does charter or private. I know folks with kids at Roosevelt and at Bowie High (not the Summit program) and they are happy there. All of these kids are white and middle class with educated parents if that matters.

Hi, we live in Balk Hill, right by the Woodmore town center. Our children are zoned for Earnest and Flowers. Earnest is indeed horrible. Do not send your child there. Flowers is good but good for PG county. On Nextdoor, people complained about Flowers children not having desk to write or sit on. Wtf? And the principal came on Nextdoor to basically say, in a nice way, that this is true, but it is taken care of now. There are Charter schools like CMIT North and South but how they operate is gross to me.
+1.... Unfortunately, I live in Upper Marlboro zoned for Wise, James Madison and Melwood Elementary and next year I am at a loss for where my kids go to school.

Two problems with this. I think you seriously misunderstand the level of wealth that's moving to Hyattsville. Townhomes are $500,000+. New build single family homes on subdivided lots are selling for $600,000. All the private schools I'm familiar with in Prince George's County are genuinely diverse.

Flowers is a good school and has 2 very good academic programs
1. Science & Tech & Project Lead the way
Also the Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George's Community College is just minutes away, but it's a test in school

What most parents don't realize is that the education provided in PG schools is at minimum standards, not even grade level. So, the longer your kid is in PG schools, the further behind they are. Private schools,usually teach 1-2 years ahead of grade level - to ensure that by the time standardized tests are given, students will be more successful. My kid took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th...Not because the kid is a genius, but because of the quality of the earlier education. I realize that private school is a stretch on family budgets...I sacrifice vacations, drive a used car, use coupons, etc, but my kid is excelling and educationally competitive with other students in schools in this area and around the country.

Our public elementary is fine, if uninspiring and plagued with an unacceptably high level of dysfunction and poor communication. Our local middle school and high school are not fine. We wish it were otherwise, but despite the magical thinking of our neighbors, the structural and institutional problems aren't going to suddenly go away if only people like me were to send our kids to these schools. In fact, I don't know where they'd even put more kids. The schools are bursting at the seams already and the small playground is filled with "temporaries" (as it has been for as long as we've lived here). The solution that makes living in this county work for us, and we do love everything else about where we live, is to send our kids to Friends Community School.
