You should've had the kids wear their costumes to school, parade around in them, etc and then when the novelty has worn off - as in time for the playground and nap - costumes come off and the kids are on normal clothes.

There is always a parent (not blaming the child here) that doesn't think the rules apply to them. It doesn't get better.

Our preschool director would have made short thrift of that parent!!!

Where did OP say she was a preschool teacher? THis could easily have been my kids' kindergarten class.

I'm sorry OP - parents are awful, I don't know how you stand us.

Sometimes my kid is awful in the morning also, but I have yet to resort to making his teacher or class pay the consequences!

Our preschool doesn't do costumes. There is always the potential that someone could wear something that is scary to another child and even more likely they will be doing messy activities that will make it difficult in a costume. I never had an issue with it since the kids will be wearing their costumes tonight anyway. I just figured every preschool did this for the same reasons. shrug

But you can't keep a kid from wearing a costume to preschool. Couldn't he dress like that every day if he wanted to really?

No. Appropriate clothing is required.

Not OP but any decent parent can follow instructions and not let the child tell them how it's going to be. She should have told the child the costume goes in the bag for later or we leave it at home.

Same here. Doesn't matter to me that your kid "didn't want" to follow the same rules everyone else did

OP, you should have pulled out the kid's extra clothes and changed him before the costume became such a big issue.

So other little kids - who also wanted to wear their costumes - were upset because of her decision. Her needs were more important than anyone else's - including little kids. The utmost in entitlement.

The parent is a jerk. Everyone else managed the instructions just fine.

Our preschool has kids come in costume, do the parade and party thing, and then change. Worked really well for both 3 & 4 year old classes. Maybe try that instead next year, OP?

My 4 year old didn't want to wear his costume to school. Thankfully his teacher is super accommodating and when my son saw that everyone else was in costume, she helped him put his on.

Exactly. The mother however is significantly older than preschool age and should know how to handle her own child.

That's lame, but any time an event like this happens at school the school/teacher should be fully aware that it won't go as planned.
