If the $10,000 is for "clothes, jewelry, entertainment" that's ridiculous even if you're making $1 million+. $120,000 is 12% of your gross income and likely 33% of your after tax and after fixed costs income. (mortgage, schools, household expenses). Our HHI has been at or above that level for over ten years and I can't imagine me spending $10,000 a month on "clothes, jewelry and entertainment". Give your wife a credit card that is only to be used for her "allowance" expenses and you will quickly see where the money is going. I would also suggest you tell her to stop hanging out with high maintenance friends.

My husband and I both have an allowance, we've done it since we got married and I worked and he was in law school and we still do it. Everything else in the joint. For all I know, he spends his on hookers and blow....

I don't get an allowance and we've never discussed one. I manage all of our expenses and know how much money is in our checking account and my DH knows that I'm financially smart and thrifty. If he wanted to have a conversation about putting me on an allowance I'd say "WTF are you talking about?!"

No, not unless the OP is doing the same. I can see a very small allowance for both of them --some privacy in their money --but most should be joint anyway unless they have some prenup or one has proven to be really recklessly wasteful.

If this is just for the items you mentioned, it is absurdly excessive --unless you do the same. And the answer depends on if you make $1million or $1.8, 2.5, whatever and your ages, your other expenses like mortgage, and your savings. I am assuming no kids yet. Why not just have her "allowance" come out of a joint checking account from which all bills are paid (even if you put them on your credit card, you need to pay that bill each month). That way, she can see the relative costs of her purchases against the family necessities.
