Google the Jolly Roger service. I think the NYT had an article on it recently. Basically, you pay for a voice message that just strings callers along. The sample recordings are absolutely hilarious. I tried the technique once, just by saying uh huh a lot and asking them to repeat themselves over and over. The person exploded on me and it was truly satisfying.

I tell them to hang on, I am soooo thankful they called because my machine had been acting up, as I boot up my computer. I put the phone down, continue what I was doing and every now and then, I say, "just a few more minutes. My computer is reaalllll slow." Some hold for 10 minutes....
I'm so happy it prevented them from calling many people during that time.
My dad used to do something like that he tell the telemarketer he's really interested but he had to put the guy on hold. Then he stringing along a few times until they'd hang up

They're going to call you back every 29 minutes until you buy their crap or service if you do that, you numbskull.

I’ve started to stay on the line when I get those crappy delayed-answer robocalls where they try to give you a ‘free’ vacation. If you feign enthusiasm for about 60 seconds they get to the question about whether your household income is over $40,000 a year. Once you say “no” they will never, ever call you again.

Who are you people getting calls from actual people? Mine are almost all automated. Or they have that long delay in the beginning which is my cue to hang up. And that’s if I’ve answered the phone - with caller ID it’s really no longer necessary to answer junk calls.

I'm polite at first but if they start being rude, they get the airhorn. A friend told me she did that to telemarketers and I thought it was brilliant, so I bought one myself.
