Although I assume it's not OP in all of the replies, I'm pretty amazed by the mental gymnastics involved to justify why someone making far less than minimum wage doesn't deserve a tip when you're getting pick up from RUTH'S CHRIS. You can afford a $77 steak dinner but can't cough up for a $5 tip? Please. You. Are. Cheap.

This. I waited tables and did carry out orders in college. The server, bartender, or whomever is taking time away from other duties to get your food together. 10% is standard for pickup from a regular sit down restaurant, but I think 5-10% is fair.

Same here. I always leave a few bucks. Carry out orders are a pain - why not just eat there or order from a place that specializes in carry out/delivery?

I only tip if I'm expected to bus my table. That obviously includes Ruth's chris if I'm not eating there and Panera even if I am.
Never at Starbucks or other coffee joints. Just stop the insanity.

Lol....taking time off...to pack your stuff for you! The word hero gets thrown around a lot, but....

Please. They're doing their job.

Yes, they are doing their job that includes packing your food but they are paid almost entirely by tips. You should tip them, 5% -10% seems reasonable.

I'd tip $10. The old school idea of not topping on take out comes from a long ago era where people who worked in restaurants could earn a living wage and the income disparity between the rich and poor is not so large and increasing. I'm a umc now but worked as a waiter to support myself through school. If I can afford to eat steak, I can afford to leave a tip

You crazy for that

Well, it's typically $40-50 so 10%. I don't think that's crazy.

I tip 10% for takeout, no? I generally tip 20% for restaurant service.

I asked Tom siestema this on a WP chat. He said to tip. Someone is taking time off from their other duties (for which they get tips) to pack your stuff up for you and run the bill. I usually do between 5 and 10%.

THe same waitstaff and bar staff who rely on tips are packing your order up for you. Leave them a few dollars, round up to the next $5 at least.

tipping is for the service that you get when you eat there. since i'm not availing of the service, i don't tip. Same thing when I order extra food to go. I pay tip for all the food and drink consumed there, since that is what they are servicing you for.

Carryout at Ruth's is done by the bartender, isn't it? So while he's fixing your bag he's ignoring his customers. Gotta leave him a 5 spot.
