I think you underestimate the number of kids who want to get away from this region (and the children of people like you) and the parents willing to send their kids to schools in the Midwest where the other students are a bit less status-obsessed.

If you want to send your kid to OSU then do it - why the need to seek validation from an anonymous internet forum.

It's gigantic. You come out tougher than you went in because you have to navigate a lot. Kids coming out are probably poised to be capable, successful and mentally tough.

Yep, went to a state school and couldn't get into a top school. And I probably make more than most of those who did go to a top school.

It's a bit like UVA in this regard -- very hard for many Ohio students to get into especially form population centers like Cleveland and Columbus (in 80s it was open enrollment like many state schools), somewhat easier for international and OOS students, especially those who are full-pay.

I grew up in Ohio, and Ohio State is much harder to get into now than in the late '80s/early '90s.

Ohio State seems like a good value among public universities (price relative to ranking), actually has merit aid for OOS students, and seems to be strong in some areas that interest my DS. It's on our list of schools to visit.

If looking at Big 10 colleges, most DC-area kids target in order:

1. Michigan, Northwestern
2. Wisconsin
3. Indiana (good b-school, party college), PSU (party college)

OSU for whatever reason seems off the radar? Not sure if it has something to do with vibe or OOS costs? I think Miami-Oh might be more popular with kids from around here.
