My 6 yr olds still love their warm milk in the morning, out of a sippy cup. It was always our snuggle time and they still want it (and are very articulate about it now.)

I have told them that as soon as the cups give out (one is about to crack) that's the end. But frankly, I'm not distraught about hanging onto that vestige of baby'hood.

My four year old walks over to the fridge grabs the carton of milk and pours it into a sippy cup (or plastic cup) when she is thirsty .I don't know what the problem with milk or sippy cups is...

LOL!!! I know this wasn't the point of the post, but I can't help but respond! My DS will drink a cup of milk, an adult sized bowl of oatmeal, a banana, a cup of raisins, and any crackers he can get his hands on while I'm preparing the rest - usually about 3 ritz crackers or a handful of goldfish. Then 30 minutes later in the care he asks for a granola bar.

Can you use a different sippy cup? One that doesn't have so many parts? Like the take n toss which is just two pieces. If she only uses it once a day I don't think the "hard spout" issue will be that big of a deal.

I wouldn't worry about milk in the morning. We did it for awhile, because my DD would wake up at 5/5:30am and we'd do milk in our bed while my DH and I got up and ready for the day. We head to breakfast around 6:30.

Op - I am with you. I couldn't wait to get rid of the sippy cups. At around 2 years our Munchkin 360 cup ripped on top and that was that. I told my DD that we gave it to Baby Emily (she's my excuse for all the stuff that disappears around here). There was a couple of days of asking for her cup, but she wanted the milk more than the cup and drank out of a regular cup with no problem.

At some point the routine will have to change. It is up to you to decide!

Oh, and OP, just use the take and toss cups. You can toss them in the dishwasher without a basket, there are no little parts.

I posted this and wanted to say that said 4 year old ONLY drinks milk out of a sippy. Everything else is out of a regular open cup but she refuses to drink milk out of any cup other than a sippy (except at daycare where her only option is an open cup and her friends are all doing it). If I give her an open cup at home, she just won't drink it.

+1

My 5 and 6 year old eat their breakfast watching tv in the morning in the living room so I give them their milk in the sippy cup to avoid spilling on my floors. They drink out of regular cups other times of day but nothing but a sippy is allowed in the living room. I bought a dozen or so of those "take and toss" ones and just use those. We throw them in the dishwasher to wash, no special cleaning required. I want to transition to the straw ones soon.

LOL I'll raise you one. We still do evening AND morning milk from a baby bottle at 3.5. It's totally ridiculous, but hey, it works, so I'm not the one to fix it. DS drinks from cups and bottles the rest of the day.
