LOL. I am a jew and I speak from experience about IU!!

I grew up in Cleveland and never thought about the friendliness of strangers one way or another until I went to medium large college in southern Ohio. You'd pass people on the paths between buildings, and they'd say hi to you. Quite a revelation and at first I'd think, do I know them?. Not sure if has to do with big city/small town or what.

Yes OP. I'm from OH and people are much friendlier there. I always forget that when I visit (haven't lived there in 30 years). People hold the doors, say hello, tell you about how their kid got in and offer to help at no cost oftentimes.

I went to Carleton. Obviously there were lots of midwesterners there, but it also draws a diverse set of students nationally and internationally.

+1 -- My son transferred to Rice and found it easy to make friends. The residential college system helps with this as does the collaborative emphasis on the academic side. More broadly, the school seems to attract kids who are smart and ambitious, but also down to earth and friendly. And Houston is a friendly place -- that might also be a factor influencing campus culture, particularly in the example set by staff and faculty.

Pomona. My student ended up at Harvard, but when he toured Pomona, not only did it look like the Stanford of his dreams (compact campus, beautiful Spanish-style, and California-mission architecture), but every student appeared to know every other student; walking the campus with all of these friendly hellos, smiles, and acknowledgements to each other.
