Ugh. I would much rather go to dinner than get more junk to clutter up the house. A blanket or mug with the kids pictures is a terrible gift. Especially because you'll feel guilty getting rid of it. Plan a picnic, a hike, spa, anything but more junk.

I'm turning 39 in a few weeks, so close enough. I would like a hike or other outing outdoors, followed by an elaborate picnic (bought or made) with some nice wine. I wouldn't mind if our toddler son came along (actually, I would prefer that). A hole in the wall/small concert venue with some great music in the evening would be a big cherry on top (e.g. blues alley).

But really, it depends on the woman. Many of my friends would love a day at the spa, which has always sounded like torture to me.

Curious, about how much was food & alcohol combined? Not trying to be nosy, just comparing. I hosted a bday party for DH's birthday, but he wanted a lot more people so we did a restaurant.


I would say about 2,200? Our friends are drinkers though! The tasting menu on the roof is a little more involved than in the dining room. It was really cool to be on the roof, but I feel like I should have been a bit more blown away.

Food of the month? That is hilarious, I've got to look into this.

We hardly surprise each other with gifts anymore. Perhaps he'll get me a piece of jewelry from a designer he knows I love or I'll get him some splurge item I know he wants, but other than that, we don't do too many surprise gifts. That works for us.

My husband was so anxious about what to get me for my 40th that he ended up getting me something totally ridiculous - a food of the month club. Then he forgot to cancel it. And the food stunk. When it first happened I was actually a little upset - and I am NOT a high maintenance person, was just a little worked up about turning 40 - but after a while I found it funny. Maybe just a sitter for the whole day/overnight and send her for a massage and then get a nice dinner, just the two of you. It is about the thought and effort more than the cost of the gift.

I'd like a bracelet (doesn't have to be expensive) Alex and Ani type or similar, a babysitter booked and a reservation at a good (non chain) restaurant (doesn't have to be fancy, just have good drinks, food, and atmosphere) with one or a few of my close friends that are fun to hang out with. Maybe a good bar or club with live music or a dj for cocktails after.
