My kids go to two different Elementary Schools in FCPSa and they both take a math assessment at the beginning of the year to see how much they retained from last year.

OP, my 6th grader was given a math assessment the other day. He is at an AAP center but in a regular non AAP class. It was an assessment on material students were expected to know by the end of 6th grade (so material he has not yet learned). My DS did extremely well, so they asked if we would OK them putting him in AAP math (which covers grade 7 and 8 material, they also take the Grade 7 SOL). We OK'ed the move. Otherwise, he would be learning material this year that he already showed he understood. So for math only, my son goes to a different class (AAP) for Advanced Math. He did the same thing in 4th grade (was screened and moved to Advanced Math), but last year in 5th Grade we opted to keep him in regular math for various reasons.

Many schools do this in Grades 3 and up to determine whether a child should 1)get remediation for grade level math 2)take grade level math or 3)move up to advanced math

If a child had a ton of questions they did not know, it very likely only meant that they were not ready for the advanced math class, but were appropriately placed at their normal grade level for math. it could almost mean they might need remediation. The teacher will let you know.

All elementary schools are doing it (the iReady universal screener Op referenced above). This is the first year. (There were several pilot schools last year.) The window for grades 1-6 opens next week. K does not assess until October.

I'm a middle school teacher. We give a baseline assessment every year the first week or so and then re-test at end of each quarter to look for growth. I always tell my kids what the deal is and that I don't expect them to know everything on it. Some of them still stress out about it and will spend hours on it trying to get everything right.

OP here. Yes, I got the letter, but as people said it is about iready. (I watched the video). I wonder if the teacher explained it was a pre-test and my daughter missed that part. Based on what DD said I am thinking it must have been a pre-test. Re:contact the teacher, I wait until it's something really urgent. DD seems fine and I told her she ask the teacher herself.
