Usually have a dress up party and the favor is a cape, a crown, a foam turtle shell, pirate's hat, etc.

I hate to say this again but a goody bag with a "Cars" Hot Wheel car would NOT suck to my two boys and they would definitely want the bag!!!

How do you get your children to not take a goody bag at a party when it is being offered? Especially if it is a toy car or figure or chalk or crayons - or a book? That seems so mean to me.

I went way overboard on DS's first real birthday party (we had only family birthdays and a Disneyland trip before). So for his 4th birthday, I spent about $15 per bag including the bag (which was cloth). Parents still mention our goody bags!

I would say $10 including everything is a good range.

Another vote for consumables. We've enjoyed getting bubbles, driveway chalk, temporary tattoos, coloring books, colored pencils, and stickers.

Poor kids. Kids want goodie bags, whether plastic junk or nice toys. It's only grouchy parents who don't want goodie bags.

Just had a pool party and gave each kid a 99 cent beach ball. These are 3 & 4 year olds. In trying to do one larger thing rather than the bags of little plastic things I always step on and break.

That's a great idea! In my home country ( Kuwait) we don't do goodie bags. My son hasn't had a big birthday party yet as he's only 1. We had a small family party for his first birthday.

This is why I've done parties where the kids make crafts or decorate something that they can take home. It's all included in the price of the party, and parents are happy that there is no cheap plastic crap lying around. That said, I don't think $5/favor is too much. Technically, our last favors were $10-15 but again, it was at a crafting place, so it was included in the $25/kid we paid to host the party there.

Same,goes for wedding favors! Lol!

Not a lot we had a bowling party gave out "movie size" candy boxes of junior mints, smarties, sno caps(they are at target for 1.00) also the bowling alley gave coupons to the children who attended the party so we just wrapped up the candy with nice paper and attached the coupon to it.
Another party we had at a karate place we did the same thing but attached a flyer for the karate school and a coupon for a free trial class.

I love goody bags. We usually spend $5-7. It's kind of a lot in the scheme of things, but I enjoy trying to get fun/cool/interesting things that all connect to the party theme. OP, in your situation I'd assume the friend isn't going to buy $10 McQueen cars, and in case she doesn't realize how pricey the cars are, give her a couple ideas for less expensive options.
