I board horses but won't let one on property without a several week quarantine (built a separated paddock for it). I also keep horses I have taken to shows separate. Viruses just happen, like kids get sick at daycare.

Same for our dogs.

It's happened to my dog. I didn't pay for X-rays, eventually it went away and he was fine.

You should get a pet sitter for your trip coming up. It would be a bummer if you had to cancel.

Sorry this happened, it's pretty common. One of the downfalls of boarding hopefully he feels better soon!

"Kennel cough" is a sort of umbrella term that covers a variety of illnesses, some viral, some bacterial. The vaccine is only effective against some of them, not all of them. So the shot is protecting your dog against a variety of illnesses, they just happened to contract a virus or bacterial infection not covered by the shot.

I think all these pet Vax's are BS. Recently there was a dog in VA that got rabies and it had its shots. My dog got kennel cough anyway too while boarding. The boarding places require the Bordetella vax. What is the point?

Same as previous posters said. The kennel cough vaccine is not a guarantee.
