The 8K is tuition which was part of the TA. When I was in grad school, if I did not have the TA for any reason, I was responsible for tuition. When I started working, I had to pay tuition. it is how the world works.

OP, it is utterly reprehensible to quit a teaching/TA job before the end of the contract. You are screwing over not only the university, but every student in your class(es).

The university SHOULD make you pay, and they should also refuse to release any positive references for you in the future.

Where is your advisor in all this? It is their role to advise you in this kind of hairy situation and liaise with the university and with the department that's awarding the package. You/he can probably line up someone else to do the proctoring. Also, do you still need credits to graduate or are you on a 1 credit to maintain enrollment situation?

I would handle this as professionally and upfront as possible.

OP here: They say I can work remotely but I must must must be here for 2 days to give exams. The 2 days I need to be in town are the same week I start my job. I'm not sure how to handle this. I basically have to work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and ask for Thursday- Friday off. The manager said we can talk more about it in person when I start my job next Monday.

Agree with others that if you don't meet the requirements of your scholarship/grant, the university has the right to withdraw it. In your case, it looks like your 8K of tuition reimbursement was conditional on you providing TA services. Would suggest you talk to someone in the administration who might be able to find a way to waive your semester fee or at least lower it given that you won't be taking coursework presumably.
