The eyewitness science/nature shows s for kids are often narrates by Martin sheen. They're interesting and also a nice flashback to The West Wing and my fantasy of having a president who always seems cool and reasonable

Yes! There's a good "National Geopgraphic" series for kids that mine enjoyed a lot. Bought them used on Amazon.

We like books on cd as well, so the whole family can listen and talk about it later. Dave Barry's Best Class Trip Ever was hysterical, but we've also done a lot of classics, like Black Beauty.

The Scholastic video collection is terrific for both these kids ages.
The animation of the books is really good and there are like 4 books on each dvd.

The language in Goonies is not appropriate for an 8 YO. (I just listened to in from the front seat last week)

Ah, too bad. I haven't seen Goonies in a while so don't remember the language specifically. I was focused more on the fact that it might be scary.

Watch out for those Disney movies - they often have very scary or sad bits. My sensitive 4yo can't handle them. We love Jaker's dvds, and also Timmy Time and Shaun the Sheep as others mentioned. PBS series are usually a good choice. My kids liked the Alvin movie too

+1 to shawn the sheep and Timmy time! I like to watch them too. Not much dialogue. My kids both like dino dan and dino dana, kratts kreatures in all its forms

Umm, we use headphones for the kids. If they are gong to watch movies on our beach drive, they wear headphones so I don't need to be involved - then adults can listen to music or talk.

Just a warning, Trolls scared my 4yo. I like the Magic School Bus series for my similarly aged kids (though skip the spider episode - it scared my sensitive 4yo!). You can buy them used on Amazon.

The cartoons DH and I actually enjoy along with the kids are: Phineas & Ferb, Gravity Falls

On of our favorite kids movies is Surf's Up.

You might consider some classic cartoons like Bugs Bunny and Tommy and Jerry. Those would be very non-annoying in the car because of the limited dialog.
