Reviews on the Residence are better (room size, quiet), but it is about $100 more a night.
Trip Advisor is usually very accurate (knowing that any site like that calls out the hysterics and complainers more than the praisers). Most rooms in NYC are small anyway so if there are more complaints on one hotel than the other then that may mean something.
I guess I would weigh how much more the quiet and room size matter. I can't remember from the beginning of the thread but if you are staying say 3 nights, so $300 + +, then that adds up. On the other hand will the room size and quietness make such a positive difference that you will enjoy the trip more?
If the results were even (with a cost differential of $100) then I would attribute that to the brand familiarity of Residence Inn but since there is a difference in the reviews and cost, then I would think about it. Do both have the same # of stars?

I've seen complaints about not being able to control the temperature in the room. Any experience?
I don't believe this to be true. But I have stayed 15 times or so and have never had an issue.

This is where we stayed over spring break with our 4 and 8 year olds. It is only a couple of blocks from Madison Square Park where there is a nice playground. We were pleased with it...good location, large rooms, breakfast included.

+1. Great hotel with good-sized rooms and great location. PP on the Residence Inn on 6th near Bryant Park is also a good one if your price point is slightly lower. That one is also a little better situated with regard to Times Square and Penn Station.
