I'm sorry, OP, but is there any evidence he can succeed in engineering school? It is tough and the classes seem to be playing to his weaknesses.

I certainly understand that not every kid has to go to MIT, but that GPA and SAT suggests he isn't a great STEM student.

As for schools: every state seems to have a technical school of some sort that you never heard of.. They keep writing to my kid.

Alfred University in upstate NY is a hidden gem. Ceramics engineering is particularly good.

Take a look at Clarkson or Union.

Have you though of New Mexico Tech? A friend of mine who went to MIT had a brother who went there for engineering. He has a great job in Texas now, so he did get a job.

OP, you're going to be surprised at the colleges your son will get into. Those SAT scores aren't exactly shabby so I personally would dissuade your DC from community college. And don't be so quick to dismiss those 4 years in an orchestra. If he is playing at competent classical level and willing to play in the college orchestra or band, that might be a hook for him. It's worth investigating if there might be a need for your DC's instrument. Nothing beats a miss but a try.

U of Delaware is a good suggestion given its size

If he doesn't mind going away from the area, what about Missouri S&T? Smallish school (under 7000) in a small college town known for its Engineering school.

+1 I live in the Pittsburgh area now and lots of kids go to these schools. Ohio University is less competitive than Miami but everyone I know who goes there loves it. The campus is also supposed to be beautiful. It's definitely on my dd's list (or should I say my list for dd to look at as she's only a sophomore, lol). She is also going to look at University of Dayton. I have no idea what the engineering programs are like at these schools but there are lots of nice schools in Ohio that are not super competitive but the kids are happy and end up with good jobs.
