The middle/ upper middle class people I know with second homes have them in WV, Shenandoah, or one of the cheaper European countries (Croatia etc).

The old guard have homes on the Eastern shore, but DC doesn't have much of an old guard.

Most people in DC are new to the area, new money, and very well traveled. My average middle class DC friends are far more well traveled than my dotcom millionaire friends back in SF. I think people are not fighting traffic to visit the same place year after year. People who do that usually have family ties on the Cape etc.

Ha ha ha. No

I'm actually one of the Vineyard/Jackson/Kiawah posters -- but I do know a couple of wealthy people who have big horse farms in Rappahannock County. They tend to live out there and keep a place in DC for when they don't want to make the drive.

GFC that is so tacky. None of the rich people I know would be caught dead in that house. It's what a Trumpster would imagine a "wealthy person's horse farm" would look like. Zero class, style, or grace.

This is more what I had in mind: https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/Rappahannock-County-VA/pmf,pf_pt/72498849_zpid/3183_rid/globalrelevanceex_sort/38.771484,-77.990056,38.614724,-78.284627_rect/11_zm/

Also no. Those ceilings. OMG. Just because it's big doesn't mean it's for the actual wealthy.

Definitely Easton MD. At least somewhat wealthy DC types seem to own a number of larger homes there.

So it seems like the answer is that there really isn't an equivalent

Because they are so close to the city, Bethany and Rehobeth are the best choices if you can afford them.

No one said "many." The question was where wealthy people spend their weekends. I know wealthy people who have houses on the Vineyard or Nantucket (as well as Kiawah or wherever), and who go up for weekends (as well as longer stretches). It's actually easier for many DC people who are lawyers or lobbyists who work in and around Capitol Hill. Unlike businesses in other cities, people in DC here often get every federal holiday off, and people who work with Capitol Hill are often able to leave town during the Congressional recesses (usually the week after any federal holiday and the entire month of August, etc).

We used to have a house that was as far away as the Vineyard, and we would go at least once a month. We sold it after the kids got into elementary school and it became to hard to go without taking them out of school. Once they're out of school, we'll probably buy another house.
