I'm guessing he's not a workaholic, he's just low-level and told to work that much. If he's still a staff attorney this far into his career, his situation is not likely to change anytime soon.

OP, you are absolutely putting the cart before the horse. I get googling someone before a date. Its 2017. Thats normal. But you are already wondering whether he will cancel your date because of work?

Staff attorneys often get overtime. He may be working a lot because (1) he has to or he loses his job because he is expected to work overtime as necessary; or (2) he seeks out the overtime because he likes the extra money.

Why waste your time? I guess you could get a meal or two out of him while you look for a real person.

Staff attorney is on the bottom of the totem poll, out of all those positions you listed. It also means they are the first to go when the firm is in financial trouble. Him being busy doesn't necessarily mean he's always busy at his job, it might just mean a deal/litigation/settlement is coming to an end. Instead of going on a first date, you come onto here and ask about his job.

Just go on the date and see what happens. It's just a date not a marriage ceremony.

How old are you? He is over 40, are you a divorcee?

I'm 45 and divorced. Just so we're clear, everything I know about the legal profession I learned from DCUM. Until I started reading this site, I had never heard the term Biglaw.

Not sure, could just be busy work and 70 hours a week of paralegal like stuff.

that said, the only way you'll know his background or what he actually does is to go on the first date and ask.

Did he get a JD, decent school, work at a bigger firm first?

Maybe he's trying to improve his position.
Maybe he sucks at his job and needs more time than other people to do it.
Maybe he's lying about how often he works.
Maybe you shouldn't go out with him if all you care about is his job.
