Totally different experience. Both are beautiful, but they are very different.
Smooth sand on panhandle beaches--you can walk forever along the waves. It's absolutely gorgeous. Inlaws are probably staying right on the beach. In the panhandle, that is what you do.

Yes I'd go to Florida in August. It beats staying in DC and not having a beach vacay. I don't understand the issue. So what if it's not? It's the beach! It's supposed to be hot. Take a cooler and some ice cold beverages of choice. Go inside to ac when you need a break. This isn't rocket science. Sheesh.

I love New England beaches, but they are two totally different experiences. We alternate between the two. I love the cold water, misty, rocky beach NE experience, but crystal white, hot, sunny Gulf beaches are great, too. I'm with the go camp -- take a cooler of cold drinks, a big beach umbrella and veg out.

At least some Atlanta schools start back the first week of August. The crowds should start thinning out in early.
