Though I have a woman in my office who does fine with length, but her skirts and dresses are SO TIGHT. She is thin, so she has the body for it, but it looks much sexier than I think it should. A little bit more give, while still being fitted, seems much more appropriate to me. But she does look great, I'll give her that.

Not true. I once had to tell an underling that she needed to dress more appropriately for the office. She was a tall girl and a dress that would be mid-knee on most women was scandalously short on her. I HATED telling her, but she was a good employee and someone needed to do it.

Agree. In some cases, the boss is truly protecting the employee from their boss or HR. I once told an employee her outfit was inappropriate because I knew that if she showed up like that again the next day, HR would have called her in because they had noticed it.

oh, and the shirt dresses with the higher cut sides look like you rolled out of bed in your pajamas or boyfriend's shirt.

I'm a female boss- working 20 years. I do not like the trend of these very short dresses and skirts. They are not professional or work appropriate. I've actually seen some girls' underwear when they bend over to pick something up. So have the men around me- happily.
Luckily, the women who report to me dress appropriately.
I've only had to enforce correct a woman a couple of times over the years. I had to correct a man once too.

And it has nothing to do with attractiveness. I'm a size 2 and wear a short dress/skirt occasionally on a date with my husband, but never/ever at work. Not what I want to be known for.

Men have been wearing the same combo of pants and button down shirts to work for 100 years

I had to tell my boss today that her skirt was tucked into her underwear!

I also accidentally wore my black suit skirt with my navy pinstripe blazer to court b/c I got dressed in the dark.

It's ok - shake it off and just try to remember not to wear that skirt again.

I think it has happened to best of us. It has happened to me and other women I know too.

It sounds like your boss was also mortified to have to give the feedback. I'm a female boss and an employee in a related work unit has taken to wearing the off-the-shoulder look that has become popular. She looks lovely, but it's not office appropriate and it will limit her. I say nothing. I really like and respect her, and I don't want her to feel embarrassed or targeted. But the right and brave thing to do is what your boss did- tell you so that you can fix it and move forward.

She did not "reprimand" you.

She quietly and privately told you about a mistake you made that you need to not repeat in the future.

She told you quietly and discreetly, in private, and kept the conversation short. She didn't drag it into some long monologue about overall how you dress, propriety, professionalism, blah, blah.

She handled it perfectly. It's YOUR turn to handle it perfectly by letting it go, and double-checking your hemlines before you walk out the door.

I think its just the opposite. he fact that she told you discreetly says to me that she values you and your work, and she wants to help you make choices that help you in your career.

Thing OP or does this happen a lot with your clothing? I think PPs situation is different because it was a pattern of behavior. I would only say something of it was that.

I agree she did you a favor. Sorry it happened but glad she told you!

I am 5' 9" and can't wear most dresses from "mall brands" like Banana and Ann Taylor. Last year's midi cuts often hit me about the knee.
