This. There are plenty of colleges without Greek life and other types of non cohabitating social groups that can be joined.

Good. Consequences this serious are the only way to ensure people don't just create secret frats and sororities.

An institution has the right to set its own rules about these things and to set its own consequences for flouting those rules. It'll only take a couple of instances of students being booted from sports team captaincies and student government posts for students (and parents) to realize those vaunted connections gained through Greek life aren't worth the risk if they lose you a leadership role or a shot at a fellowship.
