This is the take I would have. Did he cheat? You know him best. Would he admit to the smaller offense to hopefully end the issue or did he go through the mid-life crisis we all read about here several times a week from both sexes and then get cold feet when they met?

The only thing I'm sure of isnthat you don't trust him. Why else would you be snooping around his emails. Either he has behaviors that give you doubts or you are insecure, or both. Regardless, you should likely speak with someone if you want a chance at a future healthy relationship.

If he says he wanted to tell her 'in person' that they needed to stop talking, he's definitely lying.

As a man, I can safely say that meeting in person to break things off is definitely a woman thing.
Most men will avoid drama or feeling guilty at all costs, so we usually ghost if we're cutting a woman out of our lives.
We don't deal with emotions or feeling uncomfortable well, so we avoid, ice them out or ghost.
I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, because its not.

I'm just telling you that the ONLY reason a guy goes to meet a woman he's breaking things off with in person, is of he hopes to sleep with them one last time... that's it.
