Women who don't have one, and men who can't afford one. That's who.

To everyone else, they mean something.

Exactly. I have some friends who don't have one (by choice) but I've never heard them be rude about the tradition or anyone else's ring. I love my big diamond ring and the big matching diamond band. And I couldn't care less what anyone thinks about it.

I had a beautiful platinum solitaire that was stolen. It was insured, I have the $$$ to buy a new one, but I don't want one. I discovered I like not wearing a ring or any jewellery really except costume. It's nice not having to worry about my jewellery being misplaced or lost.

The investment would be me...moron.

Ha! Ha! Ha! That made me laugh. You must really think too highly of yourself!

OP if you can't afford one, you can always get a really lovely crystal or white sapphire for much cheaper. Conflict free, too. Plenty of people don't get an expensive diamond these days. But no need to be bitter about it.

+1000 I didn't think I was really into them until I got a big diamond one set in platinum. I freaking love this thing. And I love even more the fact that my future DH thought I was worth it enough to invest in something like this for me (completely of his own accord).

Anonymous wrote:Agreed, OP. It's a scam at best and at worst diamond engagement rings are just a way of advertising your potential husband's earning potential. It's tacky.

Considering the human and environmental cost of diamond mining, we can only hope they are on their way to becoming passe.

Don't overthink it= your first sentence.

When this country grants the same legal rights to non-married couples - for example, the decision maker in case of death or illness, to inherit property upon death of one's partner, to receive spouse's benefits, etc. - I promise you many people will stop getting married.

Nah. Blinging yourself out is how you out yourself as "new money" or "no money".

I don't have a diamond engagement ring but it certainly doesn't bother me if others wear them.

OP, maybe this is news to you, but it's been obvious all my life, and I'm old.

Most people are sheep.
