If you live in America, then yes, you are almost certainly SOL when it comes to maternity leave.

NP here. I actually support FMLA and leave policies that offer families options. BUT, in OP's case, her employer does offer STD, which would have solved her problem. She just didn't sign up.

If an employer offers STD but employees don't think about looking into it until after they have an issue, then it's the employee's fault.

Talk to HR about fmla- they might not have to comply with the law depending on size and work status of employees. However, it sounds like you are SOL. Work/save now and dip into savings.

Or look into maternity benefits before getting pregnant. Or save for your maternity leave. Or find a job that offers paid leave, if that is important to you.
